Pharm. D. Program - Management Masters Dual Degree Option

A Dual Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) and Master of Science in Industrial Administration (MSIA) option is available to students in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The MSIA, a one-year equivalent to the MBA, is a management master's degree that will provide recipients the knowledge and skills needed to excel in management and leadership roles. The degree is targeted for individuals who would like to become entrepreneurs or work toward upper level management positions in health care organizations or health related companies.

The dual degree option provides pharmacy students the opportunity to earn both the PharmD and the MSIA in much less time and at less cost than earning each degree separately. Although many other schools offer dual PharmD and management masters, most require an additional year of fulltime study after completing the PharmD. Purdue University's program is the only one that we are aware of which will allow students to complete both degrees by the time the PharmD degree is earned.

Is this program for you? The Dual PharmD/MSIA is designed for students who know they would like to become entrepreneurs or work toward upper level management positions in large companies. The program is intensive and is designed for academically strong students.

How will the program benefit you? The program offers the opportunity to earn a professional degree and a management master's degree from two highly rated schools. Students will be awarded separate diplomas for each degree. The program will provide students with management knowledge and skills needed to more quickly achieve positions of leadership in management more quickly. Executives in companies that recruit pharmacy students have remarked that the combination will give students a "step up" when desiring to move into a management position and "it will certainly help in the endeavor of career paths and placements."

Interested students beginning the first professional year of the PharmD in fall 2008 must take two management courses (MGMT 670 and 671) during the fall semester of their first professional year and will apply to the MSIA program in the following spring semester.
