Spring 2007 Meeting Minutes

May 18, 2007

Attendees: Mark Bunton, Kimberlie Burgner, Robert Gibson, Brian Holstine, Rola Kaakeh, Jason Lambert, Janet Redmond, Pam Ringor, Ron Rosich, Wenda Sharp Zick, Joe Dubes, Jane Krause, Holly Mason, and Dana Neary.

Welcome by Dana Neary and all members presented introduced themselves to the group.

Chad Johnson, PAA representative spoke regarding activities of the Purdue Alumni Association.

  • The new director is Kirk Czerny and they are working on "PAA" branding.
  • Upcoming events include: Indiana Black Expo, State Fair Day (Wed. August 15, 2007) - get a free milkshake coupon when you show your PAA membership card, Brookfield Zoo trip, Pregame lunches (football) - register online, and tailgates at some away football games.

Budget:

The Pharmacy Alumni Association received a $1000 grant from the Purdue Alumni Association for an event for students and alumni the night before homecoming. The purpose of the event is to increase young alumni membership.

The annual donation from the Purdue Alumni Association ($2/member) is expected on July 1, 2007. The amount will be approximately $5000.

Nominating Committee Report and Elections:

Slate of Candidates: President: Kim Burgner    Vice President: Pam Ringor    Secretary: Janet Redmond

All candidates were voted into office. Mark Bunton, Past President, will also serve as part of the leadership team.

Committees were then given time to meet and were instructed to elect a Chair and Vice Chair, brainstorm, and identify one or two action items.

Committee Reports:

Events: Chair- Wenda Zick Vice Chair - Janet Redmond

Send out a survey to pharmacy alumni to see what type of events they are interested in attending. The survey should be available both on paper and online and could also be included with the proposed newsletter.

Advancement: Chair - To be determined Vice Chair - To be determined

The full committee will have a conference call in 2-3 weeks due to having only 2 committee members present. They will elect a Chair and Vice Chair. They will discuss how alumni can assist. They plan to focus on 1 or 2 items to drive forward, choosing from the following 4 areas: alumni relations, corporate outreach, development, and public relations. They anticipate focusing mostly on corporate development and developing other areas to be covered by the other committees.

Communications: Chair - Brian Holstine Vice Chair - Jason Lambert

There is great opportunity for growth in the communications area and great potential for website improvement. All alumni should be included not just association members. They would like to include some questions on the survey to learn if there is interest in bulletin boards or list serves and what communications the alumni would like to receive. They suggest pointing out the communication tools currently available (career opportunities) and suggest having video clips available/sent out (i.e. new lounge or new practice lab).

Young Alumni: Chair - Mark Bunton Vice Chair - Brad Given

Several ideas to increase interest/membership included:

  • participate during orientation, perhaps at the ice cream social and include members of the Tippecanoe County Association of Pharmacists.
  • Ask Pharmacy Alumni Association Board members to all newly admitted pharmacy students (10-15) or write them a personal note. May also be able to include a note/flyer to them in their mailing to remind them of the ice cream social.
  • Provide Alumni Association members to speak to the pre-pharmacy class and dove tail this with a "coffee hour" for a more relaxed-atmosphere discussion.
  • Invite each class to have a student representative on the board. Perhaps elect them at the same time as the Student Council rep.
  • Include Alumni Association members at events such as the White Coat Ceremony and the Graduation Banquet.
  • Provide nametags at the White Coat Ceremony
  • Continue/enhance participation during Homecoming
  • Have board members pass out "snack packs" during finals week.
  • Create/support a mentorship program
  • Outreach to high school "recruits" and new admits.

Additional Brainstorming Ideas:

  • ipod downloads, web casts, pod casts, text messaging.
  • Set up links from pharmacy alumni website to pod cast items for sale by student organizations.
  • Get email addresses for all alumni
  • Participate in celebrating the 125th Anniversary of the school in 2009.

Board Membership Agreement and Terms:

This document outlines expectations and responsibilities for both alumni members and the school's representative (Manger of Alumni Relations). Corrections were suggested. The document will be updated and emailed to board members. Dana also recommended formally organizing terms and determining a system to rotate off current members.

Sperandio Award:

The 2006 recipient is Vyto Damasius.

The Sperandio Award is give to a pharmacist involved with the community and students, involved in a professional organization(s). In the past, the alumni board choose the recipient and Dean Svensen would like for the board to do so with the assistance of the Pharmacy Practice Department. More structure and improvement in the determining the selection criteria and the nomination process is needed. A working document of a nomination form was provided by Dana. It was suggested that a formal awards committee be chosen and changed annually. A standardized time line for nominations and presentation is needed (perhaps awarded at the graduation banquet?)

The Awards Committee for 2007 will be Vyto Damasius, Ron Rosich, and Kim Burgner.

Alumni Receptions:

Alumni receptions have been or will be held at the following events.

  • ASHP - Anaheim
  • APhA - Atlanta
  • Bowl Game - Orlando
  • New Dean reception - New Jersey
  • Preceptor reception - Louisville, KY
  • Sperandio Award Presentation - Schererville, IN
  • Dean's Executive Forum

By-Laws:

Our by-laws need updating. Please give Dana feedback about what you think needs updated. Should they be tailored/mirrored after the Purdue Alumni Association by-laws or other schools? We will proceed with electronically updating the by-laws so as to accomplish this before the next meeting date.

Respectfully Submitted,

Janet Redmond, RPh
Secretary
