Dr. Frank Brown, Jr. is a native of Detroit, Michigan. He was educated in the public school systems of Detroit and East Feliciana Parish in Clinton, Louisiana. He received his B.S. in chemistry from Southern University and A & M College in 1964. He received his doctoral degree in organic chemistry at Purdue University in 1969 under the direction of Professor Henry Feuer.
From 1968 until his retirement in 2000, Dr. Brown served as a chemist in chemical manufacturing, API manufacturing and chemical process development at Lilly Research Laboratories, a Division of Eli Lilly and Company. He moved through the ranks of the scientific ladder from Senior Organic Chemist to Research Scientist in 1974, to Senior Research Scientist in 1978 and to Research Advisor in 1991. In 1994 Dr. Brown was named Chief Scientist at Eli Lilly and Company's Clinton Laboratories, near Terre Haute, IN. In addition to his assignments in several locations within Indiana, Dr. Brown was assigned scientific and quality assurance consultancy responsibilities at Lilly manufacturing sites in Puerto Rico, The United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Dr. Brown has conducted research and development on many innovative products for human medicine, including insulins, cilofungins, propoxyphene, fenoprofen, cinoxacin, fluoxetine, cephalexin, cefaclor, and cefazolin, as well as for the Animal Health and Plant Science products Treflan, Tylosin, Monensin, and Ractopamine. He has served Lilly as a consultant to FDA, EPA, IDEM, and has testified as an expert witness in Federal and European Courts during patent and Department of Commerce litigation.
In 2000, Dr. Brown joined the Purdue University School of Pharmacy and Pharmacal Sciences as an Adjunct Professor. He served as co-instructor (with Dr. K. Morris) in IPPH 100, Introduction to Pharmaceutical Sciences, and lectured on industrial crystallization practices and procedures in IPPH 671, Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing. In 2000, he was named Manager of the Pharmacy Industrial Internship Program. In 2001, he accepted a position as Director of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Program. In this new position Dr. Brown retained his responsibilities with the Pharmacy Industrial Internship Program. In addition to the above responsibilities Dr. Brown currently serves as a Visiting Professor of Chemistry at Purdue. In this capacity he serves as the course instructor for CHM 562, Industrial Organic Chemistry. Dr. Brown also serves as a tutor for Pre-Pharmacy, Pharmacy and Chemistry undergraduate students in organic chemistry MCMP 204/205; CHM 255/256; and CHM 261/262.
Dr. Brown's civic involvement includes being an officer and director of Lafayette Home Hospital. In this capacity he provided committee leadership on the credentialing of new physicians, facilitating communication and settling of grievances between patients and the hospital, and as a representative of the hospital board of directors to facilitate open communication regarding issues between the board and the medical staffs of Home Hospital, St. Elizabeth Hospital, Arnett Clinic, St. Vincent's Hospital and physicians in private practice. Other civic activities include leadership of Dennis Burton day care center, a United Way agency. Dr. Brown has also served as a volunteer with the Central Indiana Regional Blood Center.
Dr. Brown is the father of five children, three of whom are Purdue alumni. His daughter, Sonya, received her B.S. degree from the School of Science in 1985. She currently practices dermatopathology at a clinical laboratory in Westchester County, New York. His son, Adam, received a B.S. in Computer Science in 1986 and is currently employed by Banc One Corporation in Indianapolis. David received a B.S. in Nursing in 1998. He is currently a pediatric nurse at Stanford University Hospital in Palo Alto, CA. His youngest daughter, Amanda, can hardly wait to enroll at Purdue in 2005.
