Spring 2005 Pharmacy Dean's Joint Advisory Council Meeting - May 20, 2005

Members of the Dean's Joint Advisory Council along with representatives from the School of Pharmacy faculty and staff met in Stewart Center on Friday, May 20, 2005 to discuss issues important to the future of the School of Pharmacy. The Joint Advisory Council is composed of the members of the Dean's Industrial Advisory Council, the Dean's Minority Advocacy Council, and the Dean's Professional Advisory Council.

Following a full breakfast buffet, welcome and introduction of new members, Dean John Pezzuto provided a School and University Update. Holly Mason, Associate Dean, Academic Programs, presented an Accreditation/Self Study Update, and Craig Davis, Director of the Chao Center for Industrial Pharmacy and Contract Manufacturing updated the group on the progress of the Center.

Morning breakout sessions included:

Curriculum Track: Joint Degree Programs: PharmD/PhD; PharmD/MSIA and other possible joint degree programs. Facilitators: Marc Loudon, Senior Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs; Joseph Thomas, Professor of Pharmacy Practice; and Holly Mason, Associate Dean, Academic Programs.
 
Industrial Track: Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Engineering: Curriculum and Structure. Facilitators: Steve Byrn, Head, Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy Practice; and Ken Morris, Associate Head, Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy.
 
Pharmacy Practice Track: Introductory Practice Experience. Facilitator: Patti Darbishire, Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice.

During lunch in the Purdue Memorial Union's West Faculty Lounge, Purdue's new head basketball coach, Matt Painter, spoke to the group about his hopes and dreams for the future of the Boilermaker basketball program.

Afternoon breakout sessions were:

Curriculum Track: Incorporation of Technology into Pharmaceutical Programs. Facilitators: Curt Ashendel, Associate Professor of Medicinal Chemistry; and Marc Loudon.
 
Industrial Track: BSPS Program Funding: Industrial vs. Professional Partners. Facilitators: Frank Brown, Director BSPS Program; and Maria Bowman-Horner, Manager-Business Integration, Eli Lilly and Company.
 
Pharmacy Practice Track: Medicare Part D: Impact on Practice and the Curriculum. Facilitators: Steve Abel, Head, Department of Pharmacy Practice; Steve Scott, Associate Head, Department of Pharmacy Practice; and Dave Purdy, Regional Manager, CVS Corporation.

After breakout group reports and summary closing comments, the meeting was adjourned by Dean John Pezzuto.

The Fall 2005 Joint Council Meeting will be held on Friday, October 14, 2005 at the Holiday Inn Select in Downtown Lafayette.

Council members, faculty and staff listen attentively to the presentation at the Spring 2005 Dean's Joint council meeting.   Everyone applauds the announcement of Dr. Dane Kildsig's recognition as the National Science Foundation re-named the NSF Center for Processing Research to the Dane O. Kildsig Center for Processing Research.
