White Coat Ceremony - September 18, 2005

Purdue University' School of Pharmacy held its White Coat Ceremony on Sunday, September 18, 2005 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the North and South Ballrooms of the Purdue Memorial Union. A dessert reception, complete with string quarter accompaniment, opened the ceremonies. At this annual event, established in 2000, each new pharmacy student accepted into the professional program is presented a white lab coat, and recites with his/her classmates the Oath of a Pharmacist.

Steven Keen (BSPHAR '81) Pharmacy Recruiter from event sponsor Albertsons Incorporated assisted Associate Dean Holly Mason with welcoming remarks. Steve noted that the White Coat Ceremony marks a "new beginning" in the life of a pharmacy student. He encouraged each one to make his/her last thought each evening "what have I done to make someone's life better today?"

Keynote Speaker, Dr. Michael B. McMains (BSPHAR '81) said that being a pharmacy student at Purdue right now is like "sitting on the leaf of a tree in a very large forest." "Now is the right time," he said, "and Purdue is the right place." Gallup polls show that when people are asked "who do you trust most?" for thirty years, the pharmacist has been the number one answer. The demand for pharmacists has never been higher, and the rate of health discovery is ready to explode. He recommended that the students set their goals high and strive to achieve happiness in life.

Dr. Mason introduced the Class of 2009, noting that they had the highest GPA of any First Year Pharmacy Class ever admitted: 3.7.

The students then took the Oath of a Pharmacist as a class and adjourned to the congratulations and flashing cameras of their families and friends.
