CVS Gift Announcement - October 15, 2005

Purdue President Dr. Martin Jischke holds up three fingers, signifying CVS/pharmacy's $300,000 pledge made to the School of Pharmacy for renovation of the Pharmacy Practice Laboratory.

The Purdue School of Pharmacy has been ranked No. 2 in the U.S., graduated nearly 20 percent of the country's pharmacy deans, and boasts the nation's largest graduate program. Transforming the Pharmacy Practice Laboratory into a state-of-the-art facility will help maintain and enhance the quality of education that the pharmacy profession has come to expect. A significant portion of this renovation will be made possible by the $300,000 pledge made by CVS Corporation during the Homecoming festivities on October 15, 2005. Purdue University and the School of Pharmacy extend sincere gratitude to CVS for its generous support, making our goals for a new laboratory become reality. "The Purdue University School of Pharmacy is one of the best pharmacy schools in the nation, and CVS/pharmacy is proud to be an ongoing supporter of the School's efforts to provide outstanding educational resources to its students," says Hanley Wheeler, pharmacist and Area Vice President of CVS/pharmacy. "The renovations being made to the Pharmacy Practice Laboratory will greatly enhance students' clinical skills and prepare them for the demands of today's pharmacy profession."

Our plans call for beginning renovation in May 2006, soon after the spring semester ends. We anticipate reopening the laboratory for the start of classes in August 2006, and the faculty and students couldn't be more ecstatic.

The current practice laboratory was designed and built more than 30 years ago, before the age of touch-tone phones and digital information. While certain components have been updated over the years, the current space configuration and equipment no longer meet the demands of pharmacy education today. By renovating the laboratory space, the School of Pharmacy will be addressing the needs of our students as well as their future employers and patients. In essence, the renovation will allow more flexibility in using the space as well as provide the latest technology found inpharmacy practice. "The faculty are excited about the flexibility of this new laboratory because it will allow us to grow with the profession," says Kimberly Plake, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice.

One of the missions of the School of Pharmacy is to "provide professional programs including general, scientific, and patient-centered education that prepare doctor of pharmacy graduates to deliver effective and efficient pharmaceutical care." Although the current lab does allow students to apply skills to deliver pharmaceutical care, it does not include the latest technology or the equipment to include the most basic aspects of pharmacy practice.

In this environment, it is difficult to develop new and innovative learning experiences for the students because of the limitations of the space. "Purdue is a place of high technology that provides state-of-the-art educational experiences. Renovation of this laboratory will allow us to maintain our tradition of excellence," says Dean John Pezzuto.
