Cholesterol Screenings - February 25, 2006

American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) recently performed cholesterol screenings at the St. Thomas Health Fair. Using a Cholestech LDX analyzer, Purdue's student pharmacists take a small blood sample (a "stick") and use the instrument to provide lab-quality cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and blood glucose concentrations to participants. Patients are the counseled on proper diet and medication compliance in managing both heart and vascular disease and diabetes. The screens provided at-cost to any interested individuals and provide a unique opportunity for student pharmacists to hone their patient counseling and intervention skills.
