The Great Indiana State Fair is nationally recognized as America's premiere showcase of agriculture, youth, education and entertainment. "I will always remember this fair for its unique 150th-year features and the feeling of celebration that was here each day," State Fair Executive Director Cindy Hoye said. "It seemed like everything came together and everyone had a great time; we had a tremendous turnout."
The turnout was particularly Black and Gold on Wednesday August 16, when the School of Pharmacy joined the other Purdue schools and colleges to celebrate Purdue Day at the Indiana State Fair, highlighting each unit's discovery, learning and engagement activities. Following in the success of recent years' activities, the School of Pharmacy provided Vials of Life to nearly 3,000 interested fairgoers.
One of the highlights of our booth this year was a poster by Dr. Brian Shepler, Purdue Pharmacy Students Making a Difference. The poster illustrates the many different types of clinical services and interventions our 4th professional year Doctor of Pharmacy students are making every day. During their last year of pharmacy school, these students are not here on campus, but all over the state of Indiana and beyond on clinical rotations ranging from community practice to critical care. Purdue has started using a new software program called Clini-Doc that not only allows the students to document each intervention they make, but also calculates a dollar amount saved for each recommendation accepted by the physicians. So far, our students have made approximately 1227 interventions and saved almost $250,000.
At the end of the day, Pharmacy alumni and others gathered at a picnic dinner to recognize the 100th anniversary of the Pure Food and Drug Act, which was signed into law by President Theodore Roosevelt on June 6, 1906. Dr. Harvey Washington Wiley was recognized at the dinner as "The Father of the Pure Food and Drug Act". Wiley was once a faculty member in chemistry at the newly opened Purdue University in 1874.
