Dean's Council Meeting and Reception - September 22, 2006

This Fall's School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Dean's Joint Advisory Council Meeting was held on Friday, September 22, 2006 at the Holiday Inn Select in Lafayette. Council members were particularly delighted to have the chance to meet the incoming Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences, Dr. Craig K. Svensson.

The day began with a breakfast buffet and welcome by Dr. Holly Mason, who was serving as Interim Dean at the time. Morning breakout sessions included follow-up reports on the spring council meeting by Dr. Ken Morris, Associate Head, Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy and Dr. Steve Scott, Interim Associate Dean for Professional Programs and Associate Head, Department of Pharmacy Practice; The Chao Center Update by Mr. Gerald Thomas, Business Development/Project Manager; and a presentation on "The Future of the Medical Device Industry" by Mr. Ron Dollens (BS ;70; HDR '01), Retired CEO, Guidant Corporation. Additional morning sessions included an alumni track by Ms. Dana Neary, Director of Alumni Relations and Special Events; a professional program track by Dr. Steve Scott, and an industrial track by Dr. Matt Murawski, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Administration and Dr. Brian Shepler, Director, Office of Experiential Learning.

Dr. Svensson spoke at the luncheon. His remarks were appreciated by those present. He noted that his initial plan is to look and listen, and then, working with the faculty, staff and advisory board members, make decisions on a strategic plan for the future of the School.

Afternoon sessions included an industrial track presented by Mrs. Sylvia Howell, Director BS Pharmaceutical Sciences Program; and a student roundtable discussion on leadership and career planning facilitated by Dr. Steve Scott. Following the open forum, summary and closing comments, the meeting was adjourned. That evening, over 200 faculty, staff and alumni attended a welcome reception for Dr. Craig and Mrs. Sue Svensson in the Holiday Inn Select Grand Ballrooms.

Tne next Joint Council Meeting will be held Friday, May 18, 2007, at the Purdue Memorial Union, West Lafayette, IN

 
  
Bob Bennett (BS '70, MS '72), professor of pharmacy practice, and Winnie Landis (BS '81), pharmacy manager for CVS, exchange a pinkie handshake congratulating Winnie on her appointment as president of the American Pharmacists Association.   Gerald Thomas, Business Development/Project Manager, provides an update on progress at the Chao Center for Industrial Pharmacy and Contract Manufacturing.
 
  
Ron Dollens (BS '70; HDR '01), Retired CEO, Guidant Corporation, reports on "The Future of the Medical Device Industry".   Council members, faculty, staff and students pay close attention to Dean Svensson's plans for the future of the School.
 
  
Dr. Stephen R. Byrn, Head of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy and Dr. Joseph Mo (PhD '77), CEO, President and Chairman of NexMed, Inc., exchange business cards.   Dr. Charles V. Flemming (BS '57, HDR '94) and Dr. Thomas G. Gerding (BS '52) discuss the morning's sessions.
 
  
The afternoon sessions proved quite lively as students and council members scurried into focus groups for discussion of relevant topics.   More interaction among faculty, staff, students and council members.
 
  
Christopher Smith, Director of Advancement, and Dr. Svensson give the group an overview of future fundraising goals and objectives.   Ms. Jackie Jimerson, Director of Multicultural Programs, presents an update to the council members.
 
  
Mrs. Sylvia Howell, Associate Director of the Office of Student Services and Director BS Pharmaceutical Sciences Program, provides graduation statistics for the Class of 2006.   Dr. Craig K. Svensson makes his first presentation to the Council as incoming Dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences.
