Graduate Student Awards Symposium - November 8, 2007


The annual School of Pharmacy Graduate Student Awards Symposium took place at 3:45 PM in the West Faculty Lounge of the Purdue Memorial Union. A large number of faculty and graduate students attended. The ceremony began with the awarding of the Kienly Awards for outstanding graduate student teaching, which were followed by the Jenkins/Knevel Awards for excellence in research.


The Albert and Anna Kienly Awards for Outstanding Teaching by a Graduate Student

The Kienly Awards have been endowed since 1976 by gifts from Dr. Albert V. Kienly, Jr. of the Class of 1940, as well as by an anonymous faculty gift in memory of Dr. Kienly's father and mother. Dr. Kienly's father graduated from the Purdue University School of Pharmacy in 1901.
 
 
Eric L. Barker, Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs, opened the ceremony with brief remarks.   Many faculty and graduate students came to support the awards winners.
 
 
Holli M. Duren was the Kienly Award winner from the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology.   Young-Seung Kim was the winner from Industrial and Physical Pharmacy

The Jenkins-Knevel Awards for Excellence in Research

The Jenkins-Knevel Awards for Excellence in Research are supported by Dr. Serena Ford, daughter of Dr. Glenn L. Jenkins, Dean of the School of Pharmacy from 1941 to 1966, and other donors. They are given in honor of Dr. Jenkins and Dr. Adelbert M. Knevel (PhD '57), professor emeritus, School of Pharmacy. Each winner presentd a brief talk about their award-winning research.
 
 
Bethany Hansen, Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy, was the first winner.   She spoke about "The Relationship between the Strength of Antigen Adsorbtion to an Aluminum-containing Adjuvant and the Immune Response".
 
 
The audience was very interested.   Bethany received her plaque from Dr. Barker.
 
 
James L. Donelson, better known as "Jimmy", was the second speaker.   His topic was "A New Solid-Phase Route to Prenylcysteine Derivatives: Development of Isoprenylcysteine Carboxyl Methyltransferase Inhibitors".

She spoke on "In Vitro-In Vivo Correlation of Cyp3a Inhibition by Erythromycin using a Chronically-Cannulated Rat Model".   Xin accepted her plaque from Dr. Barker.
 
 
John D. Hulleman, Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, was the final speaker.   He spoke on "Regulation of DJ-1 Structure and Function: Implications for Parkinson's Disease".

Graduate Student Awards Reception

A reception was held in the East Drawing Room immediately after the awards ceremony. Everyone enjoyed mingling with the awards winners and discussing the research presentations.
