Graduate Student Awards Symposium - November 6, 2008

The annual School of Pharmacy Graduate Student Awards Symposium took place at 3:30 PM in the West Faculty Lounge of the Purdue Memorial Union. A large number of faculty and graduate students attended. The ceremony began with the awarding of the Kienly Awards for outstanding graduate student teaching, which were followed by the Jenkins/Knevel Awards for excellence in research.

The Albert and Anna Kienly Awards for Outstanding Teaching by a Graduate Student

The Kienly Awards have been endowed since 1976 by gifts from Dr. Albert V. Kienly, Jr. of the Class of 1940, as well as by an anonymous faculty gift in memory of Dr. Kienly's father and mother. Dr. Kienly's father graduated from the Purdue University School of Pharmacy in 1901.
 
  
Dr. Eric L. Barker, Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs, and Janine Mott, Administrative Assistant for Graduate Affairs, were on hand to greet everyone as they arrived.   Dr. Barker, Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, opened the symposium by giving a brief history of both awards before introducing the Kienly Award winners.

The Jenkins-Knevel Awards for Excellence in Research

The Jenkins-Knevel Awards for Excellence in Research are supported by Dr. Serena Ford, daughter of Dr. Glenn L. Jenkins, Dean of the School of Pharmacy from 1941 to 1966, and other donors. They are given in honor of Dr. Jenkins and Dr. Adelbert M. Knevel (PhD '57), professor emeritus, School of Pharmacy. Each winner presented a brief talk about their award-winning research.
 
  
Michelle K. Papp, Jenkins-Knevel award winner for Industrial and Physical Pharmacy.   Michelle presented her research on "The Applicaion of Acoustic Emission to the manufacture of Pharmaceutical Products".

Before the final presentation, Dr. Barker listed the winners of other graduate awards for this year...   ...many of whom were present to be recognized.
 
  
Lisa Bonner was the second Jenkins-Knevel award winner in Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology.   Lisa spoke on "Exploration of the Complex Hydrogen-Bonding Network in the D1-like Dopamine Reseptors: Synthesis and Evaluation of Bicyclic Catechol-containing Dopamine Analogues". Lisa also holds the record for "longest seminar title".
