On Friday morning April 24, 2009, over two dozen Pharmacy Alumnae gathered in the Buchanan Suite of the Ross Ade Pavilion bright and early for a breakfast presentation by Dean Svensson outlining the agenda for the day's Women for Purdue conference.
The ladies then traveled to the Shively Suites in the Pavilion where they joined fellow alumnae from numerous other Purdue Schools and Colleges for the University-wide Women for Purdue session. A panel discussion was moderated by Carolyn Curiel, a former White House speechwriter, U.S. ambassador, member of The New York Times editorial board, and currently Chief of Staff, Office of the President of Purdue, on Women for Access & Success. Other panel participants included Joann DiGennaro, President of the Center for Excellence; Thena Norman, retired director of the CDC; and Sara Cobb, Vice President for Education, Lilly Endowment. Following the panel discussion there were a number of thoughtful questions from the audience before the session was concluded.
The Pharmacy Women for Purdue group returned to the Buchanan Suite and reconvened for lunch and a great networking experience with women faculty from the School. There followed afternoon panel discussions led by Pharmacy Women for Purdue steering committee members Mary Baker (BS '79), Jeannie Chaney (BS '61), Virginia Goodall (BS '84), Lisa Koss (BS '90), Jane Krause (BS '81, MS '94), Winnie Landis (BS '81), Shirley Paddock (BS '90), Katie Phillips (BS '88, PharmD '89), Sarah Sanders (BS '78, PharmD '80), Kim Wasson (BS '81), and Cindy Weil (BS '79). Discussion revolved around two issues chosen from a survey of current students: "Work/Family Life Balance" and "Mentoring/Career Advancement". Round table discussions with a group of about 30 PharmD, BSPS and graduate students followed, covering topics such as career development, mentoring our students, and alumni networking.
Faculty, staff and alumnae from all Purdue schools and colleges were then invited to an informal reception back in the Shively Suite to conclude the day's activities.
Follow up comments from Pharmacy alumnae, students and faculty attending Pharmacy Women for Purdue indicate that the day was fruitful and that it would be well received as a recurring event.
