The Professional Service Experience Organization Fair was held on September 1st to bring together first professional year pharmacy students and leaders in local healthcare community services. After meeting with the organization's leaders, students select a healthcare provider to work with throughout the year to provide direct client services. Students also work in small groups with the organization's leader to develop and implement a service project that directly benefits their clients or the organization's ability to provide care. Student groups write for grants to support project implementation. Through this course, students have developed and implemented over 100 community healthcare projects.
"Students have completed numerous projects [at LUM] including PowerPoint presentations on the ill effects of smoking and high fat diets. They interview homeless guests and help them understand their medications and the importance of following doctors orders. They make pamphlets to aid our guests in creating resumes to prepare for interviews and assist in locating and applying for social services. The students organize drives to provide food, clothing and toiletries for our guests."
