Graduate Student Awards Symposium - October 29, 2009

The annual School of Pharmacy Graduate Student Awards Symposium took place at 3:30 PM in the West Faculty Lounge of the Purdue Memorial Union. A large number of faculty and graduate students attended. The ceremony began with the awarding of the Kienly Awards for outstanding graduate student teaching, which were followed by the Jenkins/Knevel Awards for excellence in research.

The Albert and Anna Kienly Awards for Outstanding Teaching by a Graduate Student

The Kienly Awards have been endowed since 1976 by gifts from Dr. Albert V. Kienly, Jr. of the Class of 1940, as well as by an anonymous faculty gift in memory of Dr. Kienly's father and mother. Dr. Kienly's father graduated from the Purdue University School of Pharmacy in 1901.
 
  
Dr. Barker, Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs, opened the symposium by giving a brief history of both awards before introducing the Kienly Award winners.   Many faculty and graduate students attended the symposium.

The Jenkins-Knevel Awards for Excellence in Research

The Jenkins-Knevel Awards for Excellence in Research are supported by Dr. Serena Ford, daughter of Dr. Glenn L. Jenkins, Dean of the School of Pharmacy from 1941 to 1966, and other donors. They are given in honor of Dr. Jenkins and Dr. Adelbert M. Knevel (PhD '57), professor emeritus, School of Pharmacy. Each winner presented a brief talk about their award-winning research.
 
  
David E. Alonzo, Jenkins-Knevel award winner for Industrial and Physical Pharmacy   David presented his research on "Behavior of Amorphous Pharmaceuticals during Dissolution".

Jose spoke about "Molecular modeling of monoamine neurotransmitter receptor agonists by in silicio activation of the β2-adrenergic receptor".   Jose and Dr. Barker.
 
  
Ankita B. Modi, Jenkins-Knevel award winner from Pharmacy Practice.   Ankita's topic was "Relationship between Concomitant use of Anticholinerigic Antihistamines with Cholinesterase Inhibitors and Physical Functioning".
 
  
Ankita and Dr. Barker.   Before the final presentation, Dr. Barker named all of the other awards and fellowship winners for the year.
 
  
Animesh K. Aditya was the second Jenkins-Knevel award winner in Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology   Animesh presented on "Structure-based Design of Bisubstrate Inhibitors of Protein Geranylgeranyltransferase-I".
