Purdue Day at the Indiana State Fair is noted for the strong black and gold
presence and for the variety of Purdue exhibits. The midway is traditionally set
up with booths for each College or School to publicize its achievements, its
programs or whatever else the College or School desires. The College of Pharmacy
has had a number of different formats and this year included blood pressure,
glucose and lipid testing and counseling, cardiovascular risk assessment,
information on gastroesophageal reflux disease, and information on admission to
the College of Pharmacy.
As you can see from the photographs, both students (25-30) and faculty (8-9)
were present and involved. There were 275 blood samples drawn for the glucose
and lipid analysis and there were at least as many blood pressures obtained.
Information was provided on the health risks associated with high blood glucose,
elevated total cholesterol or elevated blood pressures. Note that all of the
students who did the blood sampling were certified to do so.
One of the third professional year students, Jesse Christman, created a computer
program for heartburn risk in which the user entered selected/favorite foods in
a variety of categories and then was presented with a number representing the
risk/likelihood for heartburn. This program was well received by participants.
Some of the highest blood pressures recorded were 149/102, 169/~100,~160/110,
143/128 (returned to normal after resting for 5 minutes), and 177/110. The
highest total cholesterols were 220, 224,257 and 275. The highest blood glucoses
were 145, 322 and 419. There was a cardiovascular risk of 7 of 10 using one
online assessment, and then a "very severe risk" using a different online
program (different patients). It's probably a good idea would be to identify where
healthy foods could be found at the fair and not the current deep-fried goodie!
Thanks to all who participated!
