Garnet E. Peck Symposium in Industrial Pharmacy
October 20, 2011

This symposium highlighted new developments in pharmaceutical solids: amorphous and crystalline solids. Crystalline solids are ordered arrays of molecules, while amorphous solids lack long-range order. The symposium's presentations covered cutting-edge discoveries for both types of solids, including transformations between crystal forms (polymorphs), the development of novel cocrystals and the design of amorphous forms with enhanced solubility. Speakers came from MIT and the University of South Florida, among others, and from Janssen Research & Development in Belgium.

The symposium was sponsored by the Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy and the College of Pharmacy at Purdue University. The event honored Garnet E. Peck, Ph.D., professor emeritus of the department. Dr. Peck has a record of enduring contributions to the pharmaceutical sciences, including the development of latex-based tablet coatings that have been used in the industry for more than thirty years. The goal was to stimulate interest in the symposium's focus areas and to identify opportunities for new research.
