May 29, 2009: Purdue University's board of trustees approved the appointment of the first Dane O. Kildsig Chair in Industrial and Physical Pharmacy. Elizabeth Topp, a professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Kansas, has been named as the chair and will serve as a professor and head of the Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy. Her appointment is effective July 1. read more
April 17, 2009: The faculty of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences approved a revised Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) curriculum in April 2009. Although the implementation time frame is not yet firm, it is anticipated that the listed requirements will be in place for students admitted to the professional program for the Fall 2012 semester. To meet the new pre-pharmacy requirements, students beginning pre-pharmacy study in the Fall 2010 semester may need to complete a summer school session prior to admission to the professional program, in addition to a minimum of two academic years of pre-pharmacy study.

February 20, 2009: The first Doctor of Pharmacy students that are able to carry over their Twenty-first Century Scholars funding from pre-pharmacy to the PharmD program are Ashley Hoggard, Raina Narsinghani, Jonathan Huffmeyer, Shana Volkman, Lisa Huynh, and Joshua Yatsko. Students admitted to the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program of study are classified as professional students and were previously not provided financial support from the Twenty-first Century Scholars Program upon entering the professional program. January 9, 2009: Top pharmacy executives and educators will share their insights with students and the public during the 2009 Dean's Executive Forum, a class and speakers' series in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The lectures will feature 11 different speakers from a variety of careers in the field of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences. November 20, 2008: Dr. Jean-Christophe Rochet is part of a Howard Hughes Medical Institute research team that is discovering new strategies to treat neurodegenerative diseases. read more
November 11, 2008: A Purdue University researcher has created a compound that prevents replication of the virus that causes SARS and could lead to a treatment for the disease. "The outbreak of SARS in 2003 led to hundreds of deaths and thousands of illnesses, and there is currently no treatment," said Arun Ghosh, the Purdue professor that led the molecular design team. "Although it is not currently a threat, there is the concern that SARS could return or be used as a biological weapon. It is important to develop a treatment as a safeguard." read more
October 29, 2008: Purdue University is marking breast cancer awareness month in October with the creation of a collaborative research group to focus on ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease. The Purdue University Center for Cancer Research brought together 10 of the top cancer researchers from the fields of biological science, medicinal chemistry, basic medical sciences and biomedical engineering to establish the group, said Timothy Ratliff, director of the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research. October 29, 2008: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has awarded a $1.19 million contract to the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Education, a consortium of 11 leading pharmaceutical engineering universities including Purdue, to develop guidance on design specifications for drug manufacturers, officials announced Wednesday, Oct. 29. Purdue, with its strengths in pharmacy, engineering and biological sciences, will receive more than $300,000 through the FDA research contract. Purdue has been a member of the consortium since it was launched in 2005. read more
October 28, 2008: Pharmacists, who are federally required to provide educational services to some Medicare patients, are facing a number of obstacles that keep them from helping chronically ill patients, according to a new Purdue University study. Since 2003 pharmacists have been required to provide medication therapy management services for millions of Medicare patients. These patients, who qualify Medicare's Part D: Prescription Drug Plan, have multiple chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease; have been prescribed several medications; and are paying at least $4,000 in out-of-pocket medication expenses per year, says Christy Nash, an assistant clinical professor of pharmacy practice and associate director of experiential learning. read more
October 25, 2008: Ms. Jackie Jimerson received the PBAO Distinguished Staff Member award from the Purdue Black Alumni Association to recognize her contributions in developing our Multicultural Program in Pharmacy and her great work in helping African American and other students from underrepresented groups succeed. read more
October 21, 2008: Prescription drugs have improved in quality and high-paying jobs have been created, thanks in part to a Purdue University professor who is the 2008 recipient of the university's Outstanding Commercialization Award. The award, sponsored by the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership, is being presented to Stephen Byrn, the Charles B. Jordan Professor of Medicinal Chemistry. read more

August 25, 2008: Arun K. Ghosh, Professor of Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, has been selected as the recipient of the 2008 Robert M. Scarborough Memorial Award. This award, endowed by Portola Pharmaceuticals, and conferred by the Division of Medicinal Chemistry of the American Chemical Society recognizes scientists under the age of 50 at the time of nomination. read more
August 18, 2008: Karen S. Hudmon, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, has been selected to receive the Indiana Public Health Foundation's Excellence in Health Sciences Research Award. She will receive the award on Oct. 2 at the foundation's annual Hulman Awards Dinner in Indianapolis. The Indiana Public Health Foundation Inc. is an independent, public not-for-profit health institute dedicated to promote and protect the health of the individual through education, research and resource management, to achieve a higher quality of life, a healthy environment, and to foster greater knowledge of public health.

July 14, 2008: More than 1.5 million Americans a year experience preventable drug-induced injuries, says Craig Svensson, dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences. "Approximately one in every 400 hospitalizations is associated with a medication error that adversely impacts patient care. Such errors could be prevented through new technologies and standardizing hospital equipment and procedures", he says. read more

January 14, 2008: Purdue University has used part of a $25 million grant from Lilly Endowment to launch a program to help Indiana improve the quality and efficiency of health-care services. The program is called PharmaTAP, and Purdue's School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has paired with Purdue's Technical Assistance Program to advance several new outreach initiatives. read more
December 11, 2007: Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis has a new challenger, a center in the Purdue Research Park that on Tuesday (Dec. 11) became the sole North American producer of a potent antibiotic. The drug, Seromycin®, had been developed earlier by Eli Lilly and Co., which, in turn, gave the park's Chao Center for Industrial Pharmacy & Contract Manufacturing the exclusive rights to manufacture, distribute and sell the drug. read more

July 2, 2007: Dr. G. Marc Loudon, Senior Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs, will be taking a 6-month sabbatical and returning to a faculty position after nearly twenty years of service. June 22, 2007: A drug based on the design of a Purdue University researcher to treat Alzheimer's disease began the first phase of human clinical trials this week. "Millions of people suffer from this devastating disease and treatment options are very limited," said Arun Ghosh, the Purdue professor who led the creation of the treatment molecule. "Current drugs manage the symptoms, but this could be the first disease-modifying therapy. It may be able to prevent and reverse the disease." read more
April 17, 2007: A molecule designed by a Purdue University researcher could lead to the first drug treatment for Alzheimer's disease. "There are many people suffering, and no effective treatment is available to them," said Arun Ghosh, the Purdue professor who designed the molecule. "There is an urgent need for a drug to treat this devastating disease, and the scientific community has been working on this problem for many years." read more
March 26, 2007: Timothy Ratliff, a University of Iowa faculty member and administrator, has been appointed director of the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research. The appointment will be effective July 1 and includes an appointment as professor of comparative pathobiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine. read more
February 7, 2007: Janet Woodcock, the chief medical officer of the Food and Drug Administration, will speak at Purdue on Thursday (Feb. 8) and Friday (Feb. 9) as the visiting lecturer for the annual Varro E. Tyler Distinguished Lectureship. Woodcock, who held the position of deputy commissioner and chief operating officer before assuming her current position, will present two lectures during her visit. January 9, 2007: Purdue University will launch what is believed to be the nation's first expert team to investigate serious medication errors and provide recommendations for prevention. "The Food and Drug Administration reports that 1.3 million people are injured by medication errors each year and, tragically, it estimates that such errors are responsible for at least one death a day," said Craig Svensson, dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences. April 1, 2005: U.S.News & World Report has ranked Purdue University's doctoral program in pharmacy fourth in the nation. The ratings, which will appear in the magazine's "America's Best Graduate Schools" on Monday (April 4), are based on survey results of pharmacists in accredited pharmacy programs across the country. This is the first time pharmacy doctoral programs have been ranked in the magazine's annual survey of academic programs, which it has published since 1987. ...read more

"The Pezz Dispenser", formerly known as "Chip Chat," was the new name for the School of Pharmacy Newsletter. This E-newsletter was distributed on a monthly basis to all pharmacy alumni for whom we had an email address. Unfortunately, we have had to suspended distribution of the e-newsletter due to technical issues, including spam filters on our readers' computers causing hundreds of returned e-mails each month.
