Established in 1873, the Ebert Prize is the oldest pharmacy award in the United States. The award recognizes the author(s) of the best report of original investigation of a medicinal substance published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the past year. read more February 20, 2012 Fred Regnier, the J.H. Law Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, and Jean-Christophe Rochet, Associate Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, led the team that discovered how the protein DJ-1 shuts down a protective function needed to prevent the death of neurons in Parkinson's disease, possibly opening the door to new drug strategies to treat the disorder. read more February 17, 2012 Noll L. Campbell, Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, has been selected to receive the Merck/American Geriatric Society 2012 New Investigator Award. He will receive the award at the annual meeting of the society in May. Watts, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology in the College of Pharmacy, are discovering the next generation of insecticides directed at disease-carrying insects like mosquitoes, ticks and tsetse flies, which could help professionals in the human health, veterinary and crop production sectors. read more January 30, 2012 After 16 years of service, Dr. Steven Abel is stepping down as Head of the Department of Pharmacy Practice to assume a new position as Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs. He will continue his appointment and duties as Associate Dean for Clinical Programs in the College. Dean Svensson has announced a transitional leadership team for the Department, to be effective February 1, 2012. This leadership team distributes the current responsibilities of Department Head across several individuals to enable leadership for the Department without unduly disrupting ongoing activities of these individuals. The leadership team announced is: Dr. James Tisdale, Interim Head Dean Svensson expressed thanks on behalf of the College to Dr. Abel for his passionate leadership of the department over the past sixteen years and his gratitude to the individuals who have agreed to assume these interim leadership roles. January 11, 2012 Dr. Kyle Hultgren, the managing director for the Center for Medication Safety Advancement, was profiled in Purdue Today. read more December 22, 2011 Dr. Lynne Taylor, graduate student Jared Baird, and visiting scholar Bernard van Eerdenbrugh earned the 2012 Ebert Prize from the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences for their paper entitled "A Classification System to Assess the Crystallization Tendency of Organic Molecules from Undercooled Melts". The Ebert Prize is awarded to the best paper in JPharmSci containing original investigation of a medicinal substance. Their paper appeared in the September 2010 issue, which was dedicated to Dr. Byrn. December 16, 2011 Robert A. To date, In Touch is servicing 60 facilities, 7,000 beds, all in the state of Indiana. February 10, 2011: The College of Pharmacy's Center for Medication Safety Advancement is inviting Indiana pharmacies to join the Medication Safety Research Network of Indiana, or Rx-SafeNet, the first practice-based research network in Indiana focusing on medication-related problems and patient care at community pharmacies. read more February 8, 2011: Walgreens representatives, Cathy Simmons, P'98 and Stevan Mizimakoski, P'99 presented Dean Craig Svensson and Ms. Jackie Jimerson with a check for $10,000 to aid in the College's efforts in increasing diversity among student pharmacists. A portion of the money will be used for a Walgreens Diversity Scholarship that will go to a student selected by the College whose efforts have raised awareness in diversity and community outreach. The remainder of the money will be given to the College's Multicultural Programs to develop, implement, and support these programs that have a positive impact on diversity in the College. December 10, 2010: Dr. V. July 17, 2009: Tiffany Mousel, an academic adviser in the School of Pharmacy, has been selected as an Outstanding New Adviser by the National Academic Advising Association. The award is given to individuals who have demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students and who have served as an adviser for a period of three or fewer years. Mousel is one of eight award recipients this year. She will receive the award this fall in San Antonio during the National Academic Advising Association annual conference. Ghosh is now a Distinguished Professor of Medicianal Chemistry read more May 29, 2009: Purdue University's board of trustees approved the appointment of the first Dane O. Kildsig Chair in Industrial and Physical Pharmacy. Elizabeth Topp, a professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Kansas, has been named as the chair and will serve as a professor and head of the Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy. Her appointment is effective July 1. read more April 17, 2009: The faculty of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences approved a revised Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) curriculum in April 2009. Although the implementation time frame is not yet firm, it is anticipated that the listed requirements will be in place for students admitted to the professional program for the Fall 2012 semester. To meet the new pre-pharmacy requirements, students beginning pre-pharmacy study in the Fall 2010 semester may need to complete a summer school session prior to admission to the professional program, in addition to a minimum of two academic years of pre-pharmacy study. UPDATE: The new curriculum implementation has been finalized, and pre-pharmacy students will not need to attend a summer session. During their visits, the speakers will dine and meet with administrators, faculty and students. read more November 20, 2008: Dr. Jean-Christophe Rochet is part of a Howard Hughes Medical Institute research team that is discovering new strategies to treat neurodegenerative diseases. read more November 11, 2008: A Purdue University researcher has created a compound that prevents replication of the virus that causes SARS and could lead to a treatment for the disease. "The outbreak of SARS in 2003 led to hundreds of deaths and thousands of illnesses, and there is currently no treatment," said Arun Ghosh, the Purdue professor that led the molecular design team. "Although it is not currently a threat, there is the concern that SARS could return or be used as a biological weapon. It is important to develop a treatment as a safeguard." read more October 29, 2008: Purdue University is marking breast cancer awareness month in October with the creation of a collaborative research group to focus on ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease. The Purdue University Center for Cancer Research brought together 10 of the top cancer researchers from the fields of biological science, medicinal chemistry, basic medical sciences and biomedical engineering to establish the group, said Timothy Ratliff, director of the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research. These researchers include Dr. Robert Geahlen and Dr. David Riese. read more October 29, 2008: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has awarded a $1.19 million contract to the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Education, a consortium of 11 leading pharmaceutical engineering universities including Purdue, to develop guidance on design specifications for drug manufacturers, officials announced Wednesday, Oct. 29. Purdue, with its strengths in pharmacy, engineering and biological sciences, will receive more than $300,000 through the FDA research contract. Purdue has been a member of the consortium since it was launched in 2005. read more October 28, 2008: Pharmacists, who are federally required to provide educational services to some Medicare patients, are facing a number of obstacles that keep them from helping chronically ill patients, according to a new Purdue University study. Since 2003 pharmacists have been required to provide medication therapy management services for millions of Medicare patients. These patients, who qualify Medicare's Part D: Prescription Drug Plan, have multiple chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease; have been prescribed several medications; and are paying at least $4,000 in out-of-pocket medication expenses per year, says Christy Nash, an assistant clinical professor of pharmacy practice and associate director of experiential learning. read more October 25, 2008: Ms. Jackie Jimerson received the PBAO Distinguished Staff Member award from the Purdue Black Alumni Association to recognize her contributions in developing our Multicultural Program in Pharmacy and her great work in helping African American and other students from underrepresented groups succeed. read more October 21, 2008: Prescription drugs have improved in quality and high-paying jobs have been created, thanks in part to a Purdue University professor who is the 2008 recipient of the university's Outstanding Commercialization Award. January 14, 2008: Purdue University has used part of a $25 million grant from Lilly Endowment to launch a program to help Indiana improve the quality and efficiency of health-care services. The program is called PharmaTAP, and Purdue's School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has paired with Purdue's Technical Assistance Program to advance several new outreach initiatives. read more December 11, 2007: Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis has a new challenger, a center in the Purdue Research Park that on Tuesday (Dec. 11) became the sole North American producer of a potent antibiotic. June 22, 2007: A drug based on the design of a Purdue University researcher to treat Alzheimer's disease began the first phase of human clinical trials this week. "Millions of people suffer from this devastating disease and treatment options are very limited," said Arun Ghosh, the Purdue professor who led the creation of the treatment molecule. "Current drugs manage the symptoms, but this could be the first disease-modifying therapy. It may be able to prevent and reverse the disease." read more April 17, 2007: A molecule designed by a Purdue University researcher could lead to the first drug treatment for Alzheimer's disease. "There are many people suffering, and no effective treatment is available to them," said Arun Ghosh, the Purdue professor who designed the molecule. "There is an urgent need for a drug to treat this devastating disease, and the scientific community has been working on this problem for many years." read more March 26, 2007: Timothy Ratliff, a University of Iowa faculty member and administrator, has been appointed director of the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research. The appointment will be effective July 1 and includes an appointment as professor of comparative pathobiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine. read more February 7, 2007: Janet Woodcock, the chief medical officer of the Food and Drug Administration, will speak at Purdue on Thursday (Feb. 8) and Friday (Feb. 9) as the visiting lecturer for the annual Varro E. Tyler Distinguished Lectureship. Woodcock, who held the position of deputy commissioner and chief operating officer before assuming her current position, will present two lectures during her visit. Both events are free and open to the public. read more January 9, 2007: Purdue University will launch what is believed to be the nation's first expert team to investigate serious medication errors and provide recommendations for prevention. "The Food and Drug Administration reports that 1.3 million people are injured by medication errors each year and, tragically, it estimates that such errors are responsible for at least one death a day," said Craig Svensson, dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences.
