Josh Martin - How Giving Impacted My Education
Josh Martin is a Fourth-Year Professional student in the Purdue College of Pharmacy. “I come from a family of Boilermakers and have basically bled black and gold from a young age; I was always confident that one day, I would call Purdue University home,” said Josh. “Reflecting on my time here the past 6 years, I have been living out my dream; choosing Purdue was one of the greatest decisions of my life.”
What organizations are you a part of?
I was co-chair of the Orientation Steering Committee this year which was an incredibly impactful experience; with a full committee effort, we successfully welcomed 150 students of the Class of 2024 to the Purdue Pharmacy Family.
During my time on campus, College Mentors for Kids and The Paint Crew Advisory Board were two of my favorite organization experiences.
Additionally, Industry Pharmacists Organization (IPhO) has played a large role in my professional development and career aspirations. Joining the organization as a bright-eyed freshman, I was influenced by four classes of ambitious, upperclassmen role models; these individuals challenged me to “redefine pharmacist” and inspired me to advance my leadership, both professionally and personally. As president of the local chapter last year, and as a National Officer for the Midwest Region this year, my passion is to empower the next generation of industry leaders.
How has Purdue College of Pharmacy giving impacted your education and enhanced your experience as a student?
I am ever grateful for the opportunity to gain a world class education from one of the best pharmacy schools in the country; knowing there is a Boilermaker support system that is passionate about building future leaders, I am even more grateful. I love when people ask, “Where do you go to school?” because I am proud to respond, “Purdue University.” My great experience at Purdue thus far in my career would not have been made possible without the individuals who give back to students; the reduced financial burden of higher education is a great relief for my family and me. My passion for the profession of pharmacy, Purdue University, and the College of Pharmacy would not be as powerful without the generosity of our donors.
How is Purdue helping prepare you “Meet the Challenge” and prepare you for you for your career after Purdue.
Not only is the Purdue Pharmacy Program recognized among the top in the country, Purdue University as a whole, proves one of the most well-renowned institutions globally. We hear it all the time in the “real world” – whether it be from co-workers or preceptors, “Oh you’re from Purdue? I can count on you.” Even throughout this difficult “Covid-19 Era,” Purdue University continually demonstrates that it rises to challenges, not dodges them. This mindset of the University trickles down all the way to the students; once we graduate from Purdue, there is an expectation both internally and externally, that we are not only Boilermakers, but Difference Makers.
What’s your favorite Purdue memory?
There are countless to pick from, but I will go with Purdue Basketball’s Tournament run in 2019. Being one of the biggest Boiler ball fans you will ever meet, I can honestly say that I still think about either Ryan Cline’s three against Tennessee in the Sweet Sixteen or Carsen Edwards’ unconsciousness against Virginia, at least weekly. Although the tournament run ended in absolute heartbreaking fashion with an incredibly long, dark, and wet drive from Louisville to West Lafayette, having the opportunity to watch, attend, cheer, and cry with my best friends from Purdue will be a memory I will remember forever.
