The Purdue University College of Pharmacy has named John M. Allen, PharmD, BCPS, BCCCP, FCCM, FCCP, head of the Department of Pharmacy Practice, effective December 1.
Allen currently serves as an associate dean, clinical associate professor and director of the health disparities research post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. His professional areas of interest include health disparities research, antimicrobial stewardship in the intensive care unit, antibiotic dosing in sepsis, and treatment of multi-drug-resistant infections in critically ill patients.
As a researcher, Allen also currently serves as co-leader of NCI-funded CaRE2 Health Equity Center Research and Education Core
“Dr. Allen is a phenomenal addition to Purdue’s College of Pharmacy and will play a critical role in the university’s overall focus on collaboration in the health and life sciences,” said Eric Barker, Vice President for Health Affairs at Purdue and Jeannie and Jim Chaney Dean of Pharmacy. “Dr. Allen is an accomplished researcher and academic leader whose expertise aligns well with strategic initiatives in the Department of Pharmacy Practice.”
Allen holds a PharmD from Florida A&M University and completed PGY-1 and PGY-2 residencies at Tampa General Hospital. He is a dual board-certified pharmacist in critical care and pharmacotherapy and is an active member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, of which Allen was recently elected to a three-year term as Treasurer.
Allen is also an elected Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine, and American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
Prior to the University of Florida, Allen held a variety of administrative roles, including stints as a pharmacy clinical coordinator, pharmacy residency program director and director of infectious diseases pharmacy for a hospital system.
Allen succeeds Alan J. Zillich, William S. Bucke Professor of Pharmacy Practice, who returned to the faculty at the start of the 2024-2025 academic year after leading the department for 10 years.
“We are incredibly grateful for Dr. Zillich’s leadership over the last decade,” Barker said. “Under his direction, the department has solidified its place as a national leader in departments of pharmacy practice and in the areas of health access and quality for all people.”
Amy Sheehan, Purdue professor of pharmacy practice, will lead the Department of Pharmacy Practice as interim head, September 1 through November 30.
