Joanne Barrick is currently Sr. Director of Global Validation Support, within Technical Services/ Manufacturing Science at Eli Lilly and Company.  Joanne’s team provides process, cleaning, and packaging validation training and support to Lilly sites throughout the world.  Prior to joining Lilly in 2003, Joanne worked in various operations and technical services roles at Upjohn/Pharmacia/Pfizer, leaving Pfizer as Director of Non-sterile Technical Services for the Kalamazoo plant site. 

Over the past decade plus, Joanne has been very active in the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) – a professional society of over 20,000 members. She was named ISPE Member of the Year in 2012 and Chaired the ISPE Committee of the Year in 2014.  She led the ISPE Process Validation Team to provide industry guidance for practical implementation of the transformative lifecycle approach to manufacturing process validation and prior to that contributed to implementation of International Council for Harmonization (ICH) Q8 - Quality by Design approach to product and manufacturing process development.  She was a contributing author to discussion papers, articles and Good Practice Guides related to both subjects.  Joanne has led and presented at numerous conferences, including two invited presentations at FDA headquarters. She was elected to the ISPE Board of Directors (BOD) in 2014, to the ISPE BOD Executive Committee in 2018, and Chaired the International Board of Directors during 2020-2021.  During time as Chair, the organization successfully addressed challenges presented by COVID-19 – requiring a significant pivot in operating model while growing membership by 20%.

Joanne holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from Purdue University.   She has supported Purdue and the Purdue College of Pharmacy through service and philanthropic initiatives, such as endowed scholarships, Alumni Board member, presentations and discussions with students and was named to the Purdue President’s Council Advisory Board in 2023.  She was recognized with the Pharmacy Women for Purdue Leadership Award in 2015, the President’s Council Distinguished Pinnacle Award in September 2022 and as a Distinguished Alum from the Purdue College of Pharmacy in March of 2023. Joanne resides in Brownsburg, Indiana and her hobbies include a variety of sports and community service activities.
