On Friday, October 6, 2023, the Purdue University Board of Trustees formally adopted a new name for the Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy. IPPH is now the Department of Industrial and Molecular Pharmaceutics, or IMPH.

The change comes after years of extensive discussions with faculty, students, alumni, and stakeholders, said Department Head Eric Munson, the Dane O. Kildsig Chair in Industrial and Molecular Pharmaceutics.

“One critical factor was to ensure we maintain our ties to industry,” he said. “We are also aware that many people in both academia and industry identify the activities within our department as being related to pharmaceutics.”

Pharmaceutics is the process of delivering new therapies that are safe and effective at treating or preventing disease.

In addition to better aligning the department with current industry terminology, the name change also makes the department name more consistent with many of the comparable academic departments at peer institutions nationwide, which carry “pharmaceutics” in their titles.

“We believe that our new name will help students, faculty, alumni, and other friends identify with the constantly evolving fields of research occurring in the department,” Munson said.

Over the coming weeks and months, the name change will start to appear on the web, in titles, and in materials.

What won’t change is the standard of research and academic excellence in the department.
